What is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has undergone extensive undergraduate training at medical school. This is usually a 5 to 6 year degree. After graduation there is at least 2 years of internship in medical and surgical specialities. This is followed by several years of specialist psychiatric training and postgraduate exams, and then consultancy upon successful completion.

Psychiatrists have extensive expertise in diagnosing and treating often complex or severe mental health conditions. This includes having extensive knowledge of medications and other treatments.
